Note: This is something I had to write for my 3A English class. I was given the title "Help" only, and I had to use my imagination. Personally, I think I should have gotten higher than the 20/25 that I did get...but that's just me. Let me know what you would have marked it. I am considering using this as the epilogue for a story, but I am not sure. If you think is should continue it, let me know.
She forced herself to run despite the strain on her muscles. All she wanted was to lie down and sleep, but if she did that, then they'd find her. She had to get away. Far away. It was her only chance.
Jayd stumbled over an unseen obstacle and fell to her knees, skinning them on the rough earth. She resisted the urge to cry out by clamping a hand firmly over her mouth. When the pain ceased enough for her to move, she stood and forced herself to run again.
She looked over her shoulder. She could see no one, but she knew that they were there. Watching. Waiting. Waiting for her to slow down or fall again.
It's not going to happen! Jayd thought. I'm not going back there. I'd rather die. This wasn't entirely true because she wanted to live. She wanted to see her son smile and hear her sister laugh, and yes, she even wanted to hear listen to her parents nag her about how late she let Logan stay up, or what she let him eat.
Every muscle in Jayd's body was screaming in pain. Every cut was bleeding. Her torn clothes were pulled every which way by the changing directions of the wind.
She came to a roadway which crossed through the forest that she had been running in for the past few hours. She had some decisions to make, and she had to make them quickly. Which way would her pursuers expect her to take? Were she to take the road, would there be anywhere to hide if they caught up to her? Jade crossed the road and continued on through the forest.
As she ran, Jayd thought about who was chasing her. He had been so nice when she had met him at work a month before. So handsome, so charming. All that had changed when she had gotten into his car. Now, he and his buddies were looking for her, and they wouldn't be too kind (not that they had ever been) to her were they to get their hands on her, considering what she had done to get away. She smiled for a moment as she remembered the look on the face of the one named Mike when she had hit him with the frying pan.
The smile quickly left her face as blinding pain ripped through her bare foot. Jayd stooped down to examine her injury. She had stepped on a piece of glass. She pulled it out and pressed onward.
Before long, she saw some lights in the distance. Her smile was one of relief as she made her way to the front door. She pushed the doorbell and pounded on the dark oak door. Exhausted, she fell to the ground before anyone answered.
It was a woman who answered the door. When she saw Jayd, she called for her husband, who came running. Together, they helped Jayd insie, to the couch in their living room where they had been watching the evening news.
Her husband went to call an ambulance and the woman sat with Jayd. She was about to ask for Jayd's name when Jayd's picture flashed across the screen. the news anchor began speaking.
"The search is still on for 26 year old Jayd McKenna. The single mother of one has been missing since last week after accepting a ride home from a co-worker. An arrest warrant has been issued for Andrew Norton."
The woman turned the television off. Jayd's eyes closed and she smiled as she heard the approaching sirens. She was going home.
